On Gentoo I use x2go over VPN. It works when using a remote box is running Windows in VirtualBox.

Though I need to connect to a stand alone Windows 11 box, either from Gentoo box or from Windows running in VirtualBox to stand alone Windows 11.

Windows Remote Desktop is not a good solution as as soon as one connects to it, the user on the other end is logged out, if they log in I'm being logged-out.
The only ones I found are solutions for monthly fees. Are there free alternatives?

Not an area I have looked into for years now, but Windows Remote Desktop can
be configured in “Allow Remote Assistance to this computer” mode, which will
not log out the current user. Go to Control Panel/System and Security/System
then click on Remote Settings and tick “Allow Remote Assistance to this
computer”.

I've also used net-misc/freerdp, net-misc/tigervnc and x2go, but more up to
date tools I have not tried yet and therefore I don't know if they are
suitable for MSWindows are:

This setting is turn ON but still log user out.

I found another solution, Chrome Remote Desktop" works perfectly. User on Windows is not logged out when someone connect to it.

Not sure if this is related, but if you have the "Home" version on the windows
side, you might be limited to only 1 login.
